Dental Sealants

Dental Sealants for Children in Tewksbury, MA

Strong Protection for Hard-to-Reach Teeth

Even children who brush and floss daily can miss the deep grooves in their back molars. That’s where dental sealants come in. At Pediatric Dentistry and Beyond, we apply sealants to help protect your child’s teeth from cavities — painlessly and effectively.

Sealants reduce the risk of decay in permanent molars by up to 80%. They’re quick, safe, and one of the easiest ways to keep your child’s smile healthy for years to come.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Sealants are thin, BPA-free resin coatings brushed onto the chewing surfaces of back teeth. Once hardened, they form a smooth barrier that:

Blocks out food particles and plaque

Prevents acid buildup

Makes brushing more effective

Protects against cavities

They’re invisible, painless, and require no shots or drilling.

Who Should Get Sealants?

We recommend dental sealants for most children as soon as their permanent molars come in — usually around ages 6 and 12.

Sealants are especially helpful for children who:

Have deep grooves or pits in their molars

Have sensory challenges or difficulty brushing

Are prone to cavities

Have braces

Many children receive sealants during their regular cleaning visit, so there’s often no need for a separate appointment.

What to Expect

The entire process takes just 10–15 minutes per side and involves:

Cleaning and drying the teeth

Applying a gentle gel to prepare the surface

Rinsing and drying again

Painting on the sealant

Hardening it with a curing light

Most children can return to eating right after the visit — no downtime or special care required.

Are Sealants Safe for Kids?

Yes. Sealants have been used in pediatric dentistry for decades and are recommended by the CDC and American Dental Association.

At our office, we use only BPA-free, non-toxic materials that are safe for children of all ages. We also check sealants at each preventive visit and reapply as needed.

Katie is amazing! My daughter was very nervous and she was able to distract her by talking to her about things that interest her and also held her hand throughout the entire process. The girls Sho and Kathy that work the front desk are very helpful and kind as well. Both my son and daughter are no longer afraid of the dentist. Thank you so much!
