Fluoride Treatments

For decades, dentists have recognized fluoride as an important mineral that is absorbed into and strengthens tooth enamel, helping to prevent decay of tooth structures. Sodium fluoride is added to public drinking water in almost every municipality in the United States because it has proven to be safe and effective in combating cavities. Natural fluoridated water may be found in certain private wells.

What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that may be found in many foods and water. Fluoride is a mineral that dentists use to strengthen teeth and lower the risk of cavities.

What is the function of Fluoride?

Every day, your enamel (your tooth’s protective outer layer) accumulates and loses minerals. When acids from bacteria, plaque, and carbohydrates in your mouth destroy your enamel, you lose minerals. (This process is known as demineralization.) When you consume food and water that include minerals like fluoride, calcium, and phosphate, you gain these minerals. (This is known as remineralization.)
Tooth decay is caused by excessive demineralization without adequate remineralization. Dental fluoride works to protect your teeth from decay by making your enamel more resistant to acid attacks. Additionally, it stops early dental caries.

Why is Fluoride necessary for your teeth?

Fluoride is absorbed by structures like bones and teeth, strengthening them and making them more resistant to fractures and decay. Fluoride is utilized by your body in a process known as “remineralization” to repair damage caused by decay.

Where can I find Fluoride?

Fluoride protection may be achieved simply by drinking tap water. However, for many years, health specialists have recommended boosting our intake with specific food items, as well as topical fluorides found in many toothpastes and certain rinses. Fluoride may also be found in drinks such as tea and soda. To increase fluoride consumption, some dental varnishes and gels can be applied directly to the teeth.

Fluoride at your Dental Office

Until the age of 18, your dentist or hygienist will administer a fluoride treatment to your teeth at each dental appointment. This concentrated fluoride should be left on your teeth for one minute before rinsing for at least half an hour. This fluoride will strengthen the enamel of your teeth and make them more resistant to decay.
Fluoride can also be applied to your teeth by a dentist in the following forms:

Foam, which will be dispensed into a customized tray and then placed over your teeth.

Varnish, which will be applied directly to your teeth.

Gel, which will be either painted on your teeth or dispensed in a specific tray.

Katie is amazing! My daughter was very nervous and she was able to distract her by talking to her about things that interest her and also held her hand throughout the entire process. The girls Sho and Kathy that work the front desk are very helpful and kind as well. Both my son and daughter are no longer afraid of the dentist. Thank you so much!
