Are you wondering if dental sealants for children are truly necessary? Sealants have been proven to lower the incidence of decay in molars by approximately 80%, according to the American Dental Association. This is why many parents prefer to have dental sealants applied to their children’s teeth.
Children’s teeth require just as much attention as adults’ teeth. When a child’s first set of teeth is well cared for, they are more likely to have good dental health when their second set of teeth emerges.
What is a Dental sealant?
A dental sealant is a protective covering that fights off the microorganisms responsible for cavities. When food particles are left on the teeth for an extended amount of time, problems arise. These remaining food particles produce toxic acids, which cause holes to grow in the teeth, resulting in a cavity. Too much decay can result in a child being diagnosed with several cavities, jeopardizing the general health of their teeth.
Most kids are prone to cavities between the ages of 6 and 14. This is when permanent teeth force baby teeth out. It’s also when parents have less influence over their child’s food and dental care. Dental sealants work best when administered shortly after permanent teeth emerge. This is about the age of 6 for first molars and 12 for second molars.

Signs that your child needs Dental Sealants
Dental sealants will be most beneficial if administered before cavities form. Dental sealants are often required in the following circumstances:
Narrow grooves and fissures on newly erupted permanent molars
When there is staining in the grooves and fissures
When there is decay in one of the first permanent molars
Children with special needs
When baby teeth are extensively decayed
Types of Dental Sealants
There are two forms of dental sealants for children: resin-based sealants and glass ionomer sealants. Resin-based sealants adhere for a longer period of time. However, when they are administered, the region must be completely dry. Glass Ionomer Sealants include fluoride, which may help prevent (and occasionally reverse) deterioration. When the child grows older, these sealants are often replaced with resin-based sealants. Other forms of sealants include polyacid-modified resin sealants and resin-modified GI sealants.
How are sealants applied to a child's teeth?
The procedure for applying sealants is both quick and painless. A dental expert will properly dry the tooth before using a special gel to ensure that the sealant adheres to all surfaces of the tooth. It just takes a few seconds for the sealant to fully bind to the tooth, and then the gel is washed out of the mouth before proceeding on to the next tooth. The sealants are hardened using a specific light.
