FAQs for Parents

What Is a Pedodontist ?

A dentist with advanced training in treating children’s dental problems from infancy through adolescence is known as a pedodontist. In the course of their postgraduate training, pedodontists—also known as “pediatric dentists”—exhaustively study child development and psychology, behavior management, caring for kids with special needs, ways to handle oral/facial trauma, anesthesia and sedation methods, as well as develop a thorough understanding of facial growth and dental development. In addition to all of this, pedodontists also learn the practical clinical skills necessary to successfully address the dental requirements of every kid at every developmental stage. The goal of pedodontists is to make every child’s dental experience a good one since they genuinely like working with kids.

When Should My Child See The Pedodontist?

Your child’s first set of teeth is already developing before they are even born. In fact, kids will begin to erupt new teeth before they turn a year old. This explains why preserving their oral health becomes such a crucial factor at such a young age. Parents are recommended to take their child to the dentist around the time of their first birthday, per the American Dental Association.

When Will My Baby's First Tooth Appear?

In the range of 6 to 12 months, your kid will begin to erupt their first set of teeth. Although this is a remarkable milestone, you should be aware that your baby might feel a little uneasy during the process. They could become agitated while teething. They could be cranky, unable to fall asleep, unwilling to eat, and drooling a lot. Even though you have no control over the teething process, there are some things you can do to calm your baby as their new teeth are coming in. The most common methods for making your infant more at ease when developing new teeth include teething rings, a cold spoon, or wet gauze applied to their gums.

For information on when your baby’s first set of teeth will erupt into place, consult this timeline from the American Dental Association.

Even As Kindergarten Start, My Child Is Still Sucking The Thumb. Will Their New Teeth Be Affected By This Habit?

Some kids keep sucking their thumbs or fingers after they finish preschool. These kids continue to find solace, calm, and security in their hobby. It might even aid in their ability to sleep at night. As parents, you should be aware that your child is more likely to develop a poor bite if they are still sucking their thumbs or fingers when their permanent teeth erupt. This means that if the behavior has not changed by the time your child is five or six years old, you should gently and productively assist your child in breaking the habit. Having a thorough evaluation at this time is also a good idea.

Your child’s pedodontist can determine whether the alignment of your child’s teeth or jaws has changed due to habit and whether this has an impact on your child’s speech or swallowing habits. They can also share habit-controlling techniques with you and monitor your child’s growing facial and biting development. The pedodontist will go over any recommendations with you if they suggest corrective orthodontic treatment or interceptive appliances.

Katie is amazing! My daughter was very nervous and she was able to distract her by talking to her about things that interest her and also held her hand throughout the entire process. The girls Sho and Kathy that work the front desk are very helpful and kind as well. Both my son and daughter are no longer afraid of the dentist. Thank you so much!
