Sports Mouthguards
At Pediatric Dentistry and Beyond, our first focus is to ensure that your kid has a happy and healthy smile. For our pediatric patients who participate in sports, we recommend that their children use a mouthguard to help avoid oral injuries.
Who Should Use a Mouthguard?
Whether your child participates in gymnastics or football, we urge that a mouthguard be an integral component of his or her outfit. According to the American Dental Association, athletes who do not use a mouthguard are 60 times more likely to have tooth damage. Damage to our young patients’ baby teeth might prevent their adult teeth from developing properly. It’s always a good idea to be safe and have your child wear a mouthguard when participating in any sport.

What are the types of Mouthguards?
There are different types of mouthguards available, each serving a specific purpose. Here are the main types of mouthguards used in pediatric dentistry.
Stock Mouthguards
These are pre-made, ready-to-wear mouthguards that are available in most sporting goods stores.
Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards
They are made from a thermoplastic material that softens when boiled. After boiling, the child bites into the softened material to create a mold that fits their teeth.
Custom-Fitted Mouthguards
Custom-fitted mouthguards are designed and made by a dentist. The dentist takes impressions of the child’s teeth and creates a mouthguard that perfectly fits the mouth.
How Do Mouthguards Function?
Mouthguards are one of the most efficient tools for preventing dental injuries during sports because they cover the area between the cheeks and gums and function as a shock absorber following a collision. If your kid were to get a hit to the face, the mouthguard would shield their teeth from the first impact, preventing shattered teeth and harm to their cheeks and tongue. Wearing a mouthguard is a great way to be extra careful and prevent an emergency trip to the dentist, even if your child does not play a contact sport like football or wrestling.

Very helpful n friendly n checked in fast - experience was great . Kathy and Sho at the reception took care of both my kids.
Katie is amazing! My daughter was very nervous and she was able to distract her by talking to her about things that interest her and also held her hand throughout the entire process. The girls Sho and Kathy that work the front desk are very helpful and kind as well. Both my son and daughter are no longer afraid of the dentist. Thank you so much!
