Oral Hygiene Education for Kids in Tewksbury, MA

Helping Families Build Healthy Habits — One Smile at a Time

At Pediatric Dentistry and Beyond, we believe great dental care goes beyond the chair. That’s why every visit includes gentle, fun, and age-appropriate oral hygiene education for both kids and parents.

We empower children to take care of their teeth at home — helping them build lifelong habits, reduce fear, and prevent future cavities. Families from Tewksbury, Andover, Wilmington, Billerica, and surrounding areas trust us to make brushing and flossing a positive part of every child’s routine.

Why Oral Hygiene Matters — Especially for Kids

Tooth decay is one of the most common childhood health issues — but it’s almost entirely preventable. Starting early with education gives your child a major head start in avoiding cavities and dental anxiety later in life.

We teach kids why daily hygiene is important in ways they can understand, including:

What plaque is and how to fight it

Why brushing and flossing matter

How food and drink affect their teeth

Why baby teeth are important, too

When kids understand the “why,” they’re more motivated to keep up with their brushing — and feel proud of their smiles.

What We Teach (and How We Make It Fun)

We use hands-on learning, visual aids, and kid-friendly tools to turn education into something exciting and memorable. Each lesson is tailored to your child’s age and developmental stage.

Topics include:

How to brush properly (including how long and how often)

When and how to start flossing — even with baby teeth

How to use fluoride toothpaste safely

Tips for brushing with braces

How snacks, juice, and candy affect teeth

What to do if a tooth feels “weird,” loose, or sore

Younger children love our fun language, visuals, and positive rewards — making each lesson feel like a game instead of a chore.

Tips for Parents: Brushing and Flossing at Home

We understand the bedtime battle — especially when your child doesn’t want to brush. Here are some easy tips we share with families:

Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush designed for small mouths

Brush twice a day for two full minutes, even before all teeth are in

Use just a smear (the size of a grain of rice) of fluoride toothpaste under age 3

Supervise or assist brushing until your child is 7 or 8

Start flossing once any two teeth are touching

Consider an electric toothbrush for children with braces or motor challenges

Katie is amazing! My daughter was very nervous and she was able to distract her by talking to her about things that interest her and also held her hand throughout the entire process. The girls Sho and Kathy that work the front desk are very helpful and kind as well. Both my son and daughter are no longer afraid of the dentist. Thank you so much!
