Pulpotomies (Baby Root Canals) in Tewksbury, MA

Gentle, Effective Care to Relieve Pain and Save Your Child’s Tooth

When a baby tooth has deep decay or infection, early treatment can prevent pain and protect future development. A pulpotomy — sometimes called a baby root canal — allows us to preserve the tooth while keeping your child comfortable and confident.
At Pediatric Dentistry and Beyond, we offer gentle pulpotomy procedures in a kid-friendly, supportive setting. Our goal is always to reduce fear, relieve pain, and help your child feel better fast.

Conveniently located in Tewksbury, MA

What Is a Pulpotomy?

A pulpotomy is a common pediatric treatment used to remove infected or inflamed nerve tissue (pulp) inside a baby tooth. This often becomes necessary due to:

Deep or untreated cavities

Repeated decay in the same area

Trauma or injury to the tooth

Trauma or injury to the tooth

Rather than extracting the tooth, a pulpotomy allows us to:

Remove only the infected portion of the pulp

Preserve the healthy roots and surrounding structure

Maintain space for the future permanent tooth

Seal the tooth and restore it with a protective crown

It’s less invasive than an adult root canal and is typically completed in a single visit.

Is a Pulpotomy Painful?

Not at all. We use local anesthesia and gentle behavior techniques to ensure your child stays calm and pain-free throughout the visit.
Dr. Singh is known for her gentle, patient-focused approach:

Uses quiet, low-vibration tools

Explains every step in child-friendly language

Allows parents to stay in the room for support

Offers breaks, distractions, and sedation if needed

Many children are surprised by how quick and easy the procedure feels — and they often feel much better afterward.

When Is a Pulpotomy Recommended?

Dr. Singh may suggest a pulpotomy if your child:

Has persistent tooth pain, especially with hot or cold

Experiences pain at night or swelling near a tooth

Has a large cavity that reaches the nerve

Has suffered trauma to a baby molar

Needs to keep the tooth until the permanent one is ready to come in

Saving the tooth helps prevent premature loss, which can lead to crowding, bite issues, or orthodontic problems later.

What Happens During the Procedure?

Most pulpotomies are completed in one visit:

The area is gently numbed with local anesthesia

The infected pulp tissue is removed from the crown portion of the tooth

A medicated filling is placed to soothe the remaining nerve

A stainless steel crown is placed to protect the tooth and restore function

Your child will leave feeling more comfortable, and the tooth will be preserved until it naturally falls out.

Katie is amazing! My daughter was very nervous and she was able to distract her by talking to her about things that interest her and also held her hand throughout the entire process. The girls Sho and Kathy that work the front desk are very helpful and kind as well. Both my son and daughter are no longer afraid of the dentist. Thank you so much!
